The Scarlet Letter
In the book, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the character Pearl is in the story to convey a sense of wrongdoing. She is a walking symbol of the regulation that Hester and Dimmesdale passionately broke but at the same time “her mother’s only treasure!”(91). Without Pearl, the two sinners would not be reminded of their lustful interactions that they so scandalously committed.
Pearl signifies the one treasure that Hester received because of what she has done. Pearl is a gift that was given from god to Hester “as a direct consequence of the sin which man thus punished, [but] given her a lovely child […]” (92).
