My mission is called San Antonio de Padua and it is the 3rd mission in the chain. It was named after Saint Anthony. San Antonio de Padua was founded on July 4,1771 by Father Junipero Serra. This mission is located 5 miles northwest of the community of Jolon in Monterey County.
Father Serra held a bell in an oak tree and rang it and said,” Ye Gentiles,” and got an indian’s attention. Serra gave him gifts. The same day he walked towards him with his people. In 1805 there were more than 1200 Indians at the mission.
