Osteoporosis ¡V What is it?

The Osteoporosis Centre defines Osteoporosis as:
¡§A systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue, with a consequent increase in bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture risk.¡¨ (2001, Osteoporosis Centre) In layman¡¦s terms Osteoporosis is a loss of bone mass caused by insufficient calcium intake. The word ¡§Osteoporosis¡¨ means porous bones. This loss of bone mass causes bones to break easily. There is no known cure for Osteoporosis.
Individuals at Risk
Individuals most susceptible to developing the disease include those who:
„h consume insufficient calcium, or without Vitamin D compliment
„h take prescription medications that rob the body of calcium
„h eat foods high in oxalic acid that absorbs calcium from the body
„h ingest excessive alcohol
„h smoke (deprives the body of calcium)
„h have a family history of the disease
„h maintain a sedentary lifestyle
