Lion In Winter

The Lion in Winter has many themes depicted throughout the movie. The one theme that stood out the most to me is how The Lion in Winter depicts life in the middle ages.
The first thing that stood out was the homosexuality of the characters. It seems so ironic that the greatest rulers and kings of the middle ages were mostly gay. King Henry II talked about how he had loved little boys; Prince Richard said he loved King Phillip of France who apparently didn’t have a problem with it. In society today gays and lesbians draw such criticism, but in the Middle Ages it was almost assumed that you had or once had a gay lover.
Also the role of women stood out in the movie. King Henry II’s wife Queen Eleanor was kept imprisoned only being able to come out on holidays and other special occasions. What’s strange is that she holds the richest province in all of France, Aquitaine, which is sought after by King Henry II and his three sons. King Henry II would have divorced her...
