The church is originally build as a chapel for the eastern churchyard. The foundation was made 16 october 1931. The architect Andreas Jensen made it as a model of the old monestry which stood near what now is the postoffice.

Gradually became a need for a church in the eastern part of the city. The chapel was consecrated as a church on 2. december 1945 and got the name Fredens kirke (Church of peace). In 1979 the porch was extended to its present size.

The firsst sonday in advent in 1995 the tower was cencencrated. It was desigend by architect Kristian Isager. It has three bells and has space for 47 chimes at the top.

The parish of Fredens was separated from Vor Frue parish in september 1989 and is surrounded by Nyborgvej, Gl. Skaarupvej, Egenappevej, Huusomsmvej and the Svendborg sound.
