Gilbert says he wants to be a better person. Is he a good person?

In the film “What’s eating Gilbert Grape” we are introduced to a dysfunctional family from a town called Endora, a place where very little happens. The film portrays a family that is dealing with the trials and tubulations, but also the great times of having a member with a disability.
