EXPERIMENT 9: COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION
Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to determine the coefficient of kinetic
And static friction for several pairs of surfaces using a force sensor and computer application.
Procedure: 1. Find the masses of metal, plastic, and wooden block. Add 500
grams to the mass of each block and convert this sum into newtons. This value will be the normal force.
2. Connect the force sensor to the computer and enter the correct commands to test variable force. The sensor is attached to one of the blocks by a piece of string.
3. Pull block across a horizontal platform with 500 g weight resting on top. Record force vs. time.
4. Interpret graph to determine maximum static and kinetic frictional forces.
5. Turn block on side with smaller surface area touching platform and repeat step 3.
6. Repeat procedure with other blocks.
