A black hole is an extreme state of gravitational collapse. Once a neutron star uses up all of its nuclear fuel, it can no longer stand the immense force of gravity that has been pulling on itself since its birth. The star expands quickly in a violent explosion, called a Supernova, and then it begins to shrink due to the gravitational pull of its core mass.
