ASEAN


1. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN was established on 08 Aug 1967 in Bangkok by the five original Member Countries, namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined on 08 Jan 1984, Vietnam on 28 Jul 1995, Laos and Myanmar on 23 Jul 1997, and Cambodia on 30 Apr 1999.


Post World War II

2. End of Colonialism. Post World War II marked the end of colonialism of the western powers. Drained by the heavy commitments of the war lasting over six years, their hegemony over their colonies could not be sustained, thereby leading to the independence of a host of Southeast Asian countries. The late forties to the early sixties saw the birth of new nations as independent identities; constituting what are called Third World Nations of today.
