ANGELA's ASHES

In his memoir Angela’s Ashes, Frank McCourt uses technique effects including a child’s point of view, humour and language to create a funny, sad, depressing and exhilarating book which emphasises his miserable Irish Catholic childhood.


As the first chapters of the book unfold it is evident that McCourt uses a distinctive style to recollect the first few memorable years of his life. McCourt uses the child’s point of view to greatly draw attention to his childlike misunderstanding of events.

“There is blood all around the dog’s head. It’s the color of the blood from Malachy’s mouth.
Malachy has dog blood and the dog has Malachy blood.”
