AIDS in Africa

Africa is home to 70% of adults and 80% of children living with HIV in the world. The continent has buried three-quarters of the more than 20 million people who have died of AIDS worldwide. Although there is no cure for AIDS, there are drug cocktails and medical advances for those in developed countries. As late as 2002 the FDA had approved more than forty drugs in order to treat HIV and the AIDS virus as best as possible. The down side to this is that these drugs are very costly and can mainly be afforded by those in developed countries. Out of twenty five million people whom are infected by the AIDS virus, only about fifty thousand can afford to purchase the drugs. The drugs needed cost between five hundred and one thousand dollars each month. The average person living in Africa only spends ten dollars a year on health care.
