A Stroke of Good Fortune

Every person is different; nobody has exactly the same wants and needs as anyone else. So it is not too hard to see that one person’s idea of a good fortune is not necessarily the same as another’s. This is an issue that the main character, Ruby, is victim to within the story. Ruby blindly follows false hope and in the end it leads to a catastrophic epiphany (for her), but more of an ironic epiphany in the end.
Ruby is a 34 year old woman who is married to Bill B. Hill. She looks young for her age and says she has a lot of “get.” In actuality she is winded most of the time and has trouble making it to the fourth floor where she lives. She describes the steps as “steeple steps” (meaning very steep), and she knows that there is 28 steps on each flight. Though she still thinks she has “get,” Ruby blames her struggle on an illness.
