"The Lost Weekend"

Alcohol is drunk by almost everyone in the world. Some people drink for fun while others abuse the drink. Those that abuse the beverage are alcoholics who uses alcohol to relieve them of their worries and problems. Alcoholism is shown in the movie, “The Lost Weekend.” The movie spans across New York and focuses on Don Birnam, one of the many alcoholics in the city. This movie examines his life and the effect alcohol has upon it. Likewise, in the poem, “Third Avenue Across in Sunlight,” it talks about the experiences of John, another alcoholic. Through these two characters, the darkness and restraints in the life of an alcoholic are revealed.
Both characters, in the movie and the poem, are similar in that they become drunks after college, but their reasons differ. Don barman, who was successful in college as a writer, drinks to free his mind to collect his ideas together to write novels.
